Nomadic hunters from the north entered a Florida peninsula twice its current size. Small bands roamed from one water source to another hunting mammoths, mastodons, bison, horses, and other big game as well as foraging for plants and smaller animals. Hundreds of Paleo-Indian stone spear points have been found along river beds in north Florida. Probable bola-weights, parts of an atlatl (spear-thrower), an oak throwing stick, and a wooden mortar, used with a pestle to grind seeds, have also been recovered from Florida Paleo-Indian sites.
